They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.

This is a kick off from the prior verse where Paul warms us not to follow after Gentiles lifestyle. Then He goes into graphic yet an honest description of the natural man. They are in the dark and literally hate the light. The Greek word “Darkened” (skotizō) To be absent of light. Darkness literally does not exist, dark can only come about when there is no light. Just as cold does not exist except for the absence of heat. So to understand the man’s  fallen condition we have to come to grips with the fact the man is totally without light, that the living Spirit. It is the condition of the dead, as we read in Ephesians  2;1.  They do not process the understanding to seek after eternal life. Therefore, they are alienated ( apallotrioō )  to be shut out from one’s fellowship and intimacy,  come from a base word meaning “hostile”  to this fellowship of believers and intimacy they share. There hearts are hard all callus over. It is an impossible situation to be in, in and of ourselves we cannot be saved from this wretched condition, we are hopeless.  But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, “remember love is a verb“, Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.  But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. ( John 1:12,13)

In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. (1John 4:9)
